A heating system needs to run most of the time, so it is frustrating if it noisy. Here are some of the common causes of heater noises:
Blower Fans and Air Handles
The air handler and blower fan must produce some noises due to vibrations and movement of the fans. The volume of the noises depends on the model and size of the heater. You don't usually hear the noises because they are reduced by vibration isolator or dampener. The dampener is a flexible link between the air handler and the ductwork, which enables it to absorb some of the sounds.
Temperature Change in Ductworks
If your heater has been off for some time, then the ductwork may produce some noises when the heater is turned on. These noises come from the expansions of the ductwork material, which is usually a thin sheet of metal. The volume of these noises depends on the size of the ductworks as well as the prevailing temperature. Fortunately, these noises usually fade away after the materials have expanded and attained a uniform temperature.
The shape and size of your ductwork may also make them noisy. The most silent ductworks are those that have uniform size and shape and also have smooth inner sides. Round ductworks emit the least sound because of their regular shapes. Rectangular or square ductworks tend to be noisy; the noise is generated by the air as it moves and pops on sharp corners. Therefore, when installing ductworks, opt for round and thick variety if you want to minimize their noises.
Debris on Moving Parts
A typical heating system has multiple moving parts such as the motor, fan, and belt, among others. Debris stuck on any of these parts will make some noise as it strikes other parts of the system. For example, tree twigs stuck on the exhaust fan will emit noises from the outside unit of your heating system. Such debris may cause serious damage to the unit, so you should stop the system until the issue is resolved.
Note that a heating system is an electromechanical contraption that has to emit some level of noise even if it is performing optimally. You will usually hear this normal noise as a continual hum. You should only get worried if the noise changes or if you hear a separate noise aside from this low humming. In that case, consult a heating technician to diagnose and fix the issue.
